Mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine digluconate are used in the management and control of periodontal disease to reduce oral pathogens before or after surgical procedures. They are usually prescribed after conventional oral hygiene. However, some components of toothpastes are antagonistic to chlorhexidine. Few studies have addressed this antagonistic relationship, which can reduce the effectiveness of chlorhexidine. The purpose of this article is to present this antagonistic relationship between chlorhexidine and other compounds in toothpastes. Dental surgeons must have adequate knowledge when prescribing antiseptics to ensure the success of chlorhexidine treatment in Dentistry.
